It was the final game of the 1921 season when Colorado State
came to play the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln. Already
the season had been a success for Nebraska, as the Huskers
had made it big along the comeback trail. They were 6-1-0
entering the game and not a single Nebraska player wanted to
drop the guard in the season finale. Then, an end named
Clarence Swanson ignited the Cornhuskers offense that buried
CSU, 70-7. Captain Swanson set a school record when he
caught three touchdown passes in that game. And his record
stood for 50 years before All-America great and Heisman
Trophy winner Johnny Rogers matched it in a 1971 game
against Minnesota. Swanson made All-America in 1921 and
the only team to beat the Cornhuskers was powerful Notre
Dame, 7-0. During Swanson's four varsity seasons in a
Cornhusker uniform, Nebraska was 17-10-4. No one who
ever saw this fast, sure-handed receiver in action could quarrel
with his induction into the National Football Foundation's Hall
of Fame.
