Jack Jensen, California's "Golden Boy," had a long list of big
plays. In 1946 - 56-yard punt return against Wisconsin, 56-
yard run against Washington State; 47-yard touchdown pass
thrown against Oregon; touchdown pass receptions of 56
yards against Washington, 29 against UCLA. In 1947 - 64
yard run against Navy; throwing a pass which resulted in an
80-yard gain against Stanford. In 1948 - runs of 62 and 61
yards against Santa Clara, 67 against Northwestern; a 67-yard
punt against Stanford. He also intercepted seven passes in
1947. Jensen pitched and played outfield for the baseball
team. In 1947 Cal won the first NCAA baseball tournament.
Jensen out-pitched Bobby Layne of Texas in the regional final
and helped Cal win the championship game over Yale, whose
lineup included George Bush. After his junior year at Cal, he
signed for pro baseball. He played 11 years in the majors and
was Most Valuable Player in the American League with the
Boston Red Sox in 1958. Jensen had a career rushing average
of 6.0 yards, with Cal. He was born March 9, 1927, and died
July 14, 1982.
