College Football Hall of Fame partners with Memorial Hospital to present Legends Autograph Session: Tackling Breast Cancer

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – July 8, 2010 – The College Football Hall of Fame will partner with Memorial Hospital to present Legends Autograph Session: Tackling Breast Cancer in conjunction with the annual Enshrinement Festival Downtown Block Party on July 16 at 5:30 p.m. on the Gridiron Plaza. The returning Hall of Famers and other football legends come together for an autograph session to raise awareness and funds for Memorial Regional Breast Care Center.
The autograph session will feature ten gridiron sensations including:

This year’s Enshrinement Festival will be held July 16-17 at the College Football Hall of Fame. On Friday, join us for the Enshrinement Downtown Block Party featuring the Ribs Cook-Off, cornhole tournament, live music and concluding with the Fireworks Spectacular set to light up the South Bend skyline. Saturday consists of the College Football Hall of Fame Grand Parade, FanFest and Pep Rally with the culminating event, the Enshrinement Dinner and Show. George Bork
Quarterback, Northern Illinois, 1960 – 1963
Hall of Fame Class of 1999
George Bork lettered four years at Northern Illinois and was the starting quarterback for his last three seasons. In 1962, Bork led the nation in total offense and passing with 232 passes for 2,506 yards. He repeated in 1963, with 244 completions for 3,077 yards. He was the first man in college football history to pass for 3,000 yards in a season. In both 1962 and 1963 Bork was selected as Little All-America and was named Most Valuable Player in the Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Bork played in 1964-67 with Montreal in the Canadian Football League.
Billy Cannon
Halfback, Louisiana State, 1957-1959

1959 Heisman Trophy Winner
Billy Cannon clinched the 1959 Heisman Trophy with a punt return against Ole Miss on Halloween night that has simply become known as “The Run”. The leader of the Tigers’ 1958 National Championship team, Cannon rushed for 1,867 yards and 19 touchdowns and amassed 965 yards in punt/kick returns during his career. He received unanimous First Team All-America honors and placed third in Heisman voting in 1958 en route to earning consensus First Team All-America laurels and winning both the Heisman and the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award the following season. Drafted in the first round of the 1960 AFL Draft, he played 11 professional seasons with the Houston Oilers, Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs. He returned to school during each off-season to further his education, eventually receiving his D.D.S. from the Tennessee School of Dentistry in 1969 and a Master’s in Oral Biology from Loyola (Ill.) in 1971. Cannon is also a member of the LSU Athletics Hall of Fame.
Mike Golic
Defensive Lineman, Notre Dame, 1981 - 1984
ESPN Radio host and analyst
As captain of the Notre Dame football team his senior season, Mike Golic anchored the Fighting Irish defensive line. While at Notre Dame, Golic was a team defensive MVP and was a standout wrestler for the Irish. Upon graduating from the University of Notre Dame, Golic was drafted by the Houston Oilers in the 1985 NFL draft. Golic played in the NFL for nine seasons, also playing for the Philadelpia Eagles and Miami Dolphins. After retiring from the NFL, Golic began a successful broadcasting career. He now co-hosts the radio show Mike and Mike in the Morning on EPSN Radio and ESPN2 with co-host Mike Greenberg. Golic comes from a Notre Dame family. His brother Bob was an All-America linebacker and his brother Greg was a tackle. Golic’s two sons, Mike Jr. and Jake now play football for Notre Dame.
Leroy Keyes
Halfback, Purdue, 1966 – 1968
Hall of Fame Class of 1990
Leroy Keyes broke in as a sophomore playing defensive halfback for the Purdue Boilermakers. Against Notre Dame he picked off a fumble in midair and ran 95 yards to score. Keyes moved to offense and had many remarkable plays during his time at Purdue, notably scoring three touchdowns in the fourth quarter as Purdue came from 11 points down to beat Indiana 38-35 in 1968. He was a unanimous All-America selection in 1967 and 1968. He had a career rushing average of 5.9 yards a carry and completed 12 passes, 8 for touchdowns. Keyes played in the NFL with Philadelphia and Kansas City 1969-1975. After his professional career, Keyes joined the Philadelphia School District, serving as a leader in a program to keep kids in school. Keyes now works for Purdue Athletics.
George Koonce
East Carolina University, 1988 – 1992
Super Bowl XXXI Champion, Green Bay Packers
George Koonce outshined the competition during his time at East Carolina University. Upon graduation, Koonce was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1992 where he remained for eight seasons, starting 102 of 112 games. As a Packer, Koonce played all three linebacker positions and contributed to the Packers reign of success. In 1996, Koonce was a member of the Super Bowl XXXI Championship team. Upon retirement from the NFL, Koonce began a successful career as a member of athletic administration in various capacities including, a return to East Carolina University as assistant athletic director of development and the Green Bay Packers as director of player development.
Jack Lengyel
Head Coach, College of Wooster, 1966-1970, Marshall University, 1971-1974
2005 John L. Toner Award recipient
Jack Lengyel is best known for rejuvinating the Marshall football program after the tragic plane crash in 1970 that killed almost the entire team. Upon his hire, Lengyel had to recruit athletes from other sports and allow a large number of walk-ons in order to form him team. He coached at Marshall for three years, bringing to football program back from the devestation of the 1970 plane crash. One of Lengyel’s most notable games was leading the Thundering Herd to a 15-13 victory over Xavier during the 1971 season. Lengyel became the athletic director at the United States Naval Academy in 1988 until his reitrement in 2001. He currently works for XOS Technologies and is a NFF Board Member.
Fred Martinelli
Coach, Ashland University, 1959 – 1993
Hall of Fame Class of 2002
Fred Martinelli was a man of all trades; playing college football for Otterbein, coaching Ashland for 35 years, serving on the NCAA Nominating Committee and the College Division All-America Committee. His record was 217-119-12, a winning percentage of .641. He coached 72 All-America players and two National Football Foundation Scholar-Athletes. During his time as coach, Martinelli had two undefeated season; 1967 and 1972. Martinelli’s teams won five championships in the Heartland Conference and four in the Mid-Ohio Conference.
Jesse Palmer
University of Florida, 1997-2000
From 1997-2000 at Florida, Palmer alternated at quarterback with Doug Johnson and then Rex Grossman. Palmer is 11th on the Gators’ career-record list with 3,755 yards passing and 12th in career touchdown passes with 31. For his career, he completed 254 passes. He also was named to the Southeastern Conference’s academic honor roll in 1998, 1999 and 2000 and earned the Dr. Lombardi GPA Award in the spring of 1999.
The New York Giants selected Palmer 125th overall in the fourth round of the 2001 NFL Draft. He spent four years with the Giants. In 2003, starting three of the six games in which he played, Palmer completed 60 passes for 532 yards and three touchdowns. In 2004 Palmer was selected to find love on the fifth season of ABC’s The Bachelor. In 2005, he briefly spent time with the San Francisco 49ers, and later played for the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes. Palmer now works as a football commentator for ESPN College Football Primetime and ABC College Football Countdown.
Johnny Rodgers
Halfback, Nebraska, 1970 – 1972

1972 Heisman Trophy Winner
Johnny Rodgers played three years at wingback in Bob Devaney's offense. Nebraska won three Big 8 Conference titles and was national champion in 1970 and 1971. Rodgers was all-conference three times, consensus All-America in 1971 and unanimous All-America in 1972. Also in 1972, he won the Heisman Trophy and was named Player of the Year by ABC. In his career he carried the ball 130 times and averaged 5.7 yards a try. He caught 143 passes and averaged a gain of 17.3 yards. He had 133 kick returns and averaged 17.8. After the 1972 season Nebraska beat Notre Dame 40-6 in the Orange Bowl. Rodgers scored four touchdowns and passed for a fifth. He played with Montreal in the Canadian Football League (1973-76) and professionally with San Diego in the NFL (1977-78.)
Freddie Scott
Wide Receiver, Amherst, 1971 – 1973
Hall of Fame Class of 2001
In Freddie Scott’s first season, he caught 29 passes for 614 yards and six touchdowns in just seven games. In 1972, he had his best season, compiling 936 receiving yards. As a senior co-captain, Scott caught 48 passes for 786 yards and nine touchdowns running his career receiving yardage to 2,336 yards and touchdown total to 27. In just 23 career games, Scott averaged more than 100 yards receiving per game and was named New England College Division Player of the Year by UPI. A two-time ECAC All-Star and selected to play in the North-South game, Scott received Amherst's Tom Ashley Award for outstanding play in football. Scott played for ten seasons in the NFL with the Baltimore Colts and the Detroit Lions.
